The Founding of Amazon

In July 1995, Amazon began service as an online bookstore. What was the first book ever sold on Amazon.com?

And the answer: Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies.

The first book ever sold on Amazon.com was by author Douglas Hofstadter. The full title of his 1995 book is Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought. Whew!

Amazon was founded in the rented garage of Jeff Bezos' home in Bellevue, Washington. Though it wasn't quite an overnight success, within the first two months of its creation Amazon had sold to all 50 states and over 45 countries. By 2001, the company flipped its first profit, with 1 cent per share. What started off as a modest online bookseller quickly became one of the world's most profitable enterprises.

By 2011, Amazon had 30,000 full-time employees in the United States. By 2016, that number had risen to 180,000. As of 2018, the forecast was for Amazon to own 49 percent of the total American online spending. In other words, purchases on Amazon are predicted to account for half of all spending in the United States.
