From packed stadiums to fan campaigns to number one hits, the South Korean pop group BTS has been making waves since 2013. Each June, to commemorate the formation of the band, BTS HQ hosts a festival promoting everything from new merchandise to new song releases. To celebrate the kick-off of this year's BTS Festa, let's take a closer look at this chart-topping K-Pop group.
BTS is an acronym for Bangtan Sonyeondan or “Beyond the Scene." The group formed in 2013 at the hand of Big Hit Entertainment, and have since released six chart-topping studio albums. Since their inception, fans have been drawn to the honest, supportive messages put forth in their songs, as well the strides taken by the band to ensure their fans' voices are heard. As such, the fandom is the largest, and best organized, in the world. Forty million members of ARMY – that's Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth – subscribe to the BTS YouTube channel, and more than 30 million follow both the member-run Twitter account and Big Hit’s official BTS Instagram account. BTS' loyal fans have immortalized their stars, and as a result, BTS is now the biggest boyband in the world.
BTS fans also use their numbers to organize and fundraise for a variety of causes. According to this article in Time magazine:
OIAA, short for One In An ARMY, is a group that collaborates with nonprofit organizations around the world and encourages microdonations. Its first campaign, launched in April 2018 in a partnership with the nonprofit Medical Teams International, helped bring medical care to Syrians.
Recent years have brought great success to the band and its fans. According to Billboard, BTS is the fastest group since The Beatles to earn four US number one albums, doing so in less than two years. Further, BTS reps the fastest run to four consecutive number one hits since the Jackson 5 in 1970.
June 2 marked the beginning of the two-week 2021 BTS Festa, the yearly event in which the band celebrates their debut by sharing new content with ARMYs. And, with the most recent No. 1 hit "Butter," BTS is well-positioned for yet another successful commemoration of the work they've together and the fans that've helped get them there.
